Yahhh It is Friday, we went to see my wifes nephew last night it was his fourth birthday and he was thrilled with the robotic dog we bought him, it is so pleasing to see a kid who is amazed and thrilled with a $5 gift. We got hugs and kisses and he then happily went about walking this robotic dog all round the room..
Onwards with todays web 2.0 comment/ question.

Just who or what came up with Web 2.0? I know what it’s supposed to represent. But, it’s more of an empty phrase attempting to connote a brand new – no, quantum leap in what is really just an evolving medium.
Video and social sites? Just transmutations on the original GUI Mozilla interface DNA brought about by increasing data transmission speeds. Anyone else remember text? ARPANET?
Benchmarks? Maybe. Whole new version of the web? Hardly.
I could continue but that should be enough to start some comment nastiness.
Well Smed where should I begin..
Found the mention of comment nastiness a bit strange but thats ok..
You mention ARPANET which is truly ancient history in Internet terms, I didn’t get a computer of my own until 1999 and it was a 486 I think with windows 3.1.
If you remember ARPANET that makes you about 100 years old in Internet years..
People have said to me that Myspace is just a copy of some of the early geo cities sites and youtube is a copy of something else..
I think most things we use today are not really “new ideas” more of a natural progression, sort of like putting one block on top of the other to build a house.
So is web 2.0 truly new, or just a progression from ARAPNET?
Surely the thing that really matters is that we embrace the changes and use them to the best of our advantage, do I really care about the history of the car as long as it works when I get in it (and In case my brother in law is reading this, yes I know i am useless with cars)..
The advent of broadband and the increased take up of ever faster Internet connections (we are on a 7meg line now) have definitely helped with sites like YouTube as videos require large amounts of bandwidth to watch and to upload them.
But what about the online document sharing, the online bookmarking, millions of people in developing countries are using modems and working on pc’s without XP, they can’t afford the latest version of Microsoft office and the thought of downloading even open source versions (I think the download of openoffice.org is 90mb) makes them shake their heads.
Now they can use one of the many online document sites, I have been using googles version this morning, one document shared between 3 of us all in different time zones, no downloading, uploading all done in real time.
You don’t need to be on a T1 to use myspace, digg or craigslist.
Web 2.0 is a term being used to cover a lot of sins, but don’t get tied up by the terminology, I want people to see how they can use the new sites to their advantage.
As a group we do tend to like labeling things , and web 2.0 is a good label for the new style of sites, interactivity and viral marketing isn’t necessarily new but is it exciting yes!
Hi again
Thanks to everyone who has been asking questions and without further adoo here is todays question..
mmoody1222 asked
Most of the info appears to be written for people who are somewhat fimilar with all of the various aspects of 2.0. I would like to know where do I find a good basic 2.0 introduction.
I need to walk, before I can run and most of the WSO’s and other info products are very specific strategies. I think I need to get to the step before the specific strategies for Craigslist, YouTube, etc. I know it is the future, and I feel it is passing me by…
I don’t think you are alone in that feeling that way at all.
We all have our comfort zones and moving out of them is difficult and scary, many of the reports or ebooks that are available do read like a foreign language.
If you understand that there is a benefit to be had from using web 2.0 sites/concepts in your business then you are already on the right path.
Don’t be scared just because of the new label, the Internet packaging has changed but it is made up of people still and people are still basically the same.
Step one is seeing that you could use the power of these new sites/ideas/phenomenon to profit your business. (Sounds like you are there mmoody1222).
Step two depends on your business model.
Do you sell affiliate items, have a ecommerce store, use pay per lead , have adsense sites or something totally different?
Decide what your end is and then move towards it, do you want people to
Once you know what your end game is then you can look for the right platform/s , markets and methods to use to achieve that end.
Don’t be frightened by the route, decide what the destination is and then work out which route, and the beauty is that you can spread out down many paths looking for the one that is right for you.
Until tomorrow..
Paul
Hi there
I am thrilled to see so many people taking some of their time to ask questions, I do truly appreciate it.
Some of the questions really made me think and some made me realize I am on the right path to be able to help you.
I picked a few of the questions to answer over the next few days
Steve Asked
What’s the differences between web 2.0 and the previous iteration and why should I care?
A good question, if what you are doing is working why do you need to bother about this new stuff?
Web 2.0 is a more interactive market, driven by the users themselves. It definitely has things that are exactly the same as all the other websites since the dawn of time (well Internet time), but the differences are what makes it interesting.
Most web 2.0 sites have a element of being built by the user, content provided by the users means your site can grow 24/7 while you sleep and that means you are not paying anyone to provide content.
Another difference (although this has always been around).. Viral traffic
As the users of web 2.0 sites post something or find something on your site that they find funny, thought provoking or outrageous they will not just comment on it they will share the info with their friends.
We all seem to feel that we need to share certain things, one is laughter – everyone likes to laugh and they also like to see other people laugh.
The other is anger – Just think about when you get really bad service from a restaurant or car dealer, you moan and moan about him to everyone you can think of.
Steve also asked – Why should I care?
Well if you are doing ok as is and you are confident in your business and don’t think you need to look at new ways of doing things then there is no need to care.
I will say that web 2.0 is interesting and exciting, but is going to solve the world’s problems??
No of course not, no matter whether you are looking to utilize ideas from web 2.0 sites and software or sticking with things as they are you need to do one thing..
Take action
Whether it is in the form of research or trying something for yourself, Taking action is the most important thing that people seem to miss out..
Ok thats all from me for today, I will answer another web 2.0 question tomorrow..
Keep on asking , remember to include your email address as I will be giving one person who has asked a question my next product free.
